For parents interested in enrolling their child for robotics and coding classes, how do you even begin to choose? A quick search on Google will yield several enrichment centres with seemingly similar yet different courses. Here are some things you need to know first before you even choose a robotics and coding school.

Robotics Class vs Coding Class

Robotics classes and coding classes might sound similar, but there are important distinctions.

Robotics classes often blend mechanical design, electronics, and programming. It is multi-disciplinary and requires students to consider various aspects to create a functional robot.

Coding classes, by contrast, focus on developing computational thinking and programming skills without the hands-on hardware component. It can be a bit more theoretical and “dry” especially for younger kids because there is no physical manifestation of what they are working on.

Understanding these differences can help parents decide which path aligns best with their child’s interests and learning style. This is also important for parents who are considering various Direct School Admissions talent areas to secondary schools.

Screenless Coding

Screenless coding refers to teaching programming concepts without the use of digital screens or computers. Instead, children learn about algorithms, sequencing, loops, and logic through tangible activities, manipulatives, games, and storytelling. This approach is beneficial for younger learners, as it fosters computational thinking in an age-appropriate and tactile way without screen time.

Some robotics and coding schools (and preschools) incorporate screenless coding as an introductory step before progressing to more complex, computer-based learning.

Are Robotics and Coding Classes Necessary?

Before deciding if these classes are necessary, consider your child’s interests and future aspirations. Robotics and coding skills nurture problem-solving, creativity, and logical thinking which are key skills in our increasingly digital world.

Early exposure can spark curiosity and confidence, but it’s important to gauge whether your child is ready and eager to engage with these topics. Not every child will become an engineer or programmer but learning these skills can foster adaptability and resilience in facing new challenges.

Important Factors to Consider

When it comes to Robotics and Coding schools there are some important factors to consider. Enrichment classes are by no means cheap, and we understand that parents want to make an informed decision before commiting to a school long term.

School Track Record and History

A school’s reputation often speaks volumes about the quality and consistency of its programmes. Look for centres with a proven history of delivering results, be it through student achievements, competition wins, or positive testimonials from past participants. Transparency about their course structure and pricing, teaching philosophy, and partnerships with reputable educational bodies can also signal reliability.

Equally important is understanding how a centre supports ongoing development. Does the school offer pathways for students to progress from beginner to advanced levels, or opportunities to participate in robotics and coding competitions?

Nullspace has a history of training students for robotics competitions since our founding in 2008. Our teams has consistently won awards at national level competitions, and represented Singapore in various international robotics competitions such as World Robot Olympiad and FIRST LEGO League.

We train approximately 30 MOE schools every year, and we are the appointed vendor by MOE Gifted Education branch to provide Computer Enrichment Programme in all 9 GEP primary schools since 2018.

Our courses are designed and refined over the years to provide our students with a clear progressive pathway to learning robotics and coding skills. Our course fees and pricing are fully transparent. Parents can see what we offer without any pressure of sales talk. But of course if you need help with understanding our course offerings our centre managers are always available to answer your questions.

Instructor to Student Ratio

Another important consideration is the instructor-to-student ratio. Smaller class sizes often allow for more personalized attention, enabling instructors to adapt lessons to individual learning speeds and provide immediate support when students encounter challenges. This can be particularly valuable when students are new to robotics and coding, as hands-on guidance can boost both understanding and enthusiasm.

We have a max class size of 5 students per instructor. For most classes we typically maintain 3-4 students per instructor. This ensures that all of our students are able to cope with the lesson material and provide personalised attention. There is also no sharing of robotics equipment and laptops so that every student can work on their own robot or coding projects individually.

Programme Structure and Skills Progression

There are a myriad of robotics and coding courses offered by different schools, each with different course format and progression. In contrast, other enrichment programmes such as music, dance, or sports have a lot more straightforward course offering and certification process. To complicate things further, technology is a rapidly evolving field. New software tools and robotics platforms emerge every year.

For student learners, most schools will start with “block-based” coding platforms (such as Scratch, LEGO SPIKE Prime, Minecraft Education) before moving on to “text-based” coding platforms (such as Arduino, Python).

With that being said, while different schools may offer classes using the same platform, the programme structure may be vastly different. An example will be the popular LEGO Robotics platform: SPIKE Prime. Some centres offer SPIKE Prime courses as a form of project-based class: student follows a set of building and coding instructions to build a SPIKE Prime project model, each class session is one project model. This is not much different from building LEGO models at home by following a building guide. Contrast that to a skills based programme with assessment at different level intervals. The learning outcome is vastly different.

Our course offerings are split between Foundational Programmes (5 – 8 years old) and Certificate Programmes (9+ years old). Our foundational programmes are meant to be an introduction to robotics and coding for early learners by introducing them to a range of platforms, with a different project every week to sustain interest and learning. Our certificate programmes are meant for in depth learning of robotics and coding topics. Each curriculum is planned in a progressive manner, and a CSARC test at the end of every course level will determine suitability for progression.

Competition and Portfolio Opportunities

Beyond classroom-based course offerings, are there opportunities to stretch your child’s learning and skills? Being able to participate in competitions and showcase one’s projects can be valuable life experiences for a child. Having the right mentor/instructor to guide students on this preparation process is equally important because this can make or break the learning experience.

Some schools provide competition opportunitites in a free-for-all format: competition teams are formed by recruiting any and all interested students, regardless of prior experiences or skill level. Other schools have stricter selection criteria when it comes to qualifying for the competition team.

To qualify for our competition team, students have to pass various levels of skills test within our Certificate Programmes. The test requirements will differ depending on the competition. We believe that in order to do well at national level competition events, our participants have to meet a certain level of proficiency before the competition training. While other schools may try to sell the idea of allowing any child to participate at national competitions, the reality is that such teams will be disadvantaged in the competition arena.

In all forms of competitions, be it sports, performing arts, chess, etc. Children spend years to prepare for national competitions. Schools that claim that your child can do well in robotics competitions with a team of inexperienced participants are not being truthful about the preparation work involved. Usually such teams are merely copying the instructors’ solution and running it at the competition event.

Feedback and Communication

Finally, consider how each school communicates with parents. Regular feedback, progress reports, and opportunities to observe classes and trainings can help you stay engaged in your child’s development and assess their interest and proficiency.

By weighing these factors, you’ll be better equipped to make an informed choice and find a robotics and coding programme that will spark curiosity, foster creativity, and build skills for the future.

Our instructors provide written feedback to parents about their child’s progress at the end of every lesson. If you prefer to check in with the instructors directly in person you are more than welcomed to do so!
