Introducing ThinkCrate

By November 23rd, 2016Newsletter

ThinkCrate is a series of Arduino projects for children and adults who enjoy creating their electronics projects. Utilizing the Arduino platform, we hope to get as many people to get into the culture of building, making, and coding.

It all started as a dinner table conversation that led us to talk about the possibility of a hassle-free product for budding hobbyists to build their own projects and learn coding at the same time. We shared about our past experiences tinkering and building new project and the problems we faced. We found that regardless of the projects we worked on, the biggest hurdle for new makers is getting their hands on the right components for use in their projects. Minor differences in component specs can sometimes lead to hours of frustration. Some of our projects literally went up in smoke.

As educators, we see the potential in making hands on learning more accessible and relevant to kids of this generation. We envisioned a product that has compatible components put together, and well-structured instructions for users to follow in building their own project. This became the genesis of ThinkCrate.

ThinkCrate aims to teach electronics and coding through fun progressive projects. Users are provided access to ThinkPortal, the online learning platform that accompanies each ThinkCrate project. Through ThinkPortal, they can follow video instructions and step by step guide to build their projects. More importantly, users can learn about the various concepts behind each piece of code and component at their own pace.

All ThinkPortal materials are prepared from our years of experiences coaching students in both institutional and private enrichment settings. Similar to our Arduino for Families events where parents and children attend workshops to build mini-projects together, we hope that ThinkCrate will be a fun learning platform for families to look forward to. Each project is different and will be progressively more difficult. It is our dream for everyone to be able to pick up technology and learn more about them through fun at their own pace.
